Synthetic Crook Deformations in Stem Point Clouds

Simulates parameterized single- and double-directional stem deformations in tree point clouds derived from terrestrial or mobile laser scanning, enabling the generation of realistic synthetic datasets for training and validating machine learning models in wood defect detection, quality assessment, and precision forestry. For more details see Pires (2025) .

crookR

crookR is a tool to simulate “crook” deformations on tree stems from LiDAR-derived stem point clouds.

Installation

You can install the package like:

install.packages("crookR")

Example

library(crookR)
library(lidR)

data(example_stem)

Crooked_Stem <- crook_deform(example_stem)

#Turn the data.table into a LAS file for visualization
Crooked_Stem_PC <- LAS(Crooked_Stem)

plot(Crooked_Stem_PC)
